On the Internet and in photo magazines there are a lot of lens reviews. All tests show you the resolution, some provide information about the auto-focus test. Lens Reviews help you choose which lens to buy, but also how to obtain sharp pictures using the lenses you already own. At which focal length and aperture is it that my lens performs best, or worst? The pictures and tables shown in a lens review, for example at Color Photo , dpreview , DIWA Labs , DxO , Lenstip , Photo Zone, Photo Review or SLR gear tell you at which aperture, and in case of zoom lenses: at what focal length you will obtain the sharpest pictures. Unfortunately, test results are expressed in different units, making it difficult to compare the results of lens reviews directly. However, lens review results are comparable. You can compare experimental results of lenses that have been tested on different brands of cameras or cameras with different sensor sizes. Here you'll find 10 links to websites with good lens reviews. Based on test results of a few lenses, you can read how the graphs and tables from different sites and photo magazines interprets. At the bottom of the page 3 class formats will help you to determine which lens performs best in terms of resolution and contrast.

Sharpness of a lens on dpreview
On Dpreview , test results for the resolution of lenses (MTF50) are displayed in an elegant and informative way. The list of lenses reviewed on dpreview is still limited, but if your lens is on this list, these images are enormously instructive. You will see the measured resolution (MTF 50 ") of a lens not summarized in a single figure or diagram, but you will see the resolution on the entire sensor shown in color. With sliders you can adjust the focal length and aperture. Find out for yourself at which aperture and focal length your lenses show the highest performance in terms of sharpness!

Lens reviews by SLR-gear
The SLR gear website shows lens test results in a colorful and interactive way. The list of lenses tested by SLR gear is extensive. There's a big chance that one or more of your lenses will appear on SLR gear. This site is probably, along with Photo Zone , the best starting point to take a look at lens reviews. This picture shows you the resolution performance of a lens, just like on DP Review, not summarized in a single figure or single diagram is, but you see the resolution on the entire sensor. With the slider on the left you can vary the aperture, with the slider at the bottom you can change the focal length.

Sharpness of a lens and Lens blur @ DIWA labs
DIWA Labs is an organization which tests all lenses and camera for a consortium of European sites, including Let'sGoDigital. DIWA Labs shows the test results of lenses by a number of graphs for lens properties such as Lens blur , geometric distortion , chromatic aberration , resolution (MTF) and vignetting. On the Test page of DIWA labs guide you will find a good and detailed explanation of these concepts. For all terms except resolution, DIWA Labs gives the test results qualitative labels such as: poor, satisfactory, good, etc. There is no text with an explanation of the test results of individual lenses.

Lens and autofocus test: Color Photo
On the website of the leading German magazine Color Foto you can see many lens reviews (although I must admit these lens reviews are a bit hidden). There is a chart (bestenliste ") made for each specific camera. Click on the image at the left on this page to go to Colo Photo lens review. Select a camera and color photos give you a list of tested lenses on your camera fit, with the best lens on top. Color Photo lenses give a total score that ranges from 1 to 100. Color Photo reports an autofocus test in a handy bar chart. You might like the following arbitrary classification for lenses reviewed at Color Photo for the overall performance of a lens:

Lens reviews @ Photo Review
The Australian magazine Photo Review publishes lens reviews on its website. The Imatest results are summarized in an unfortunately, very small graph. Their idea is that you buy the magazine, rather than you just visit the website. But with a little effort, the images are decipherable. Here you see the measured MTF 50 (in LW / PH) for the Panasonic 20 mm f1.7 lens (mounted on a Panasonic Lumix GF1: a 12 megapixel camera). Click on the image to the test in Photo Review view). Four lines are shown in the picture:

Camera lens reviews at DxO Mark
At the DxO Mark website you will find perhaps the most extensive lens reviews. In a typical lens review by DxO Mark, test results of lenses are summarized in a small diagram (picture to the left). But you can click on tabs for a more in-depth analysis. There is a list of nearly 200 lens reviews by DxO. Test results are never absolute: DxO says a difference in score of 10% is irrelevant. Unfortunately, DxO mark scores are not comparable to the scores on other websites. But what for information does this website deliver?

Camera lens tests / lens reviews @ Lenstip
This article refers to camera lens tests / lens reviews @ Lenstip. Do the test results for the resolution of lenses @ Lenstip match with other websites, such as SLR gear, Photo Zone and dpreview? Lenstip is a Polish website, which publishes in English. Lenstip lens reviews, especially for cameras with micro-43 or APS-C sensors, report (at first sight) very different outcomes in terms of resolution in comparison with other websites. The measured resolution at the Lenstip site are specified in line pairs per mm. But if you divide the numbers reported by Lenstip by 2 (to convert to lines: LW) and then (for conversion to LW / PH) multiply by the height of the sensor (13 mm in case of a micro-43 sensor), then you can compare the results @ Lenstip with lens reviews @ other sites.
