Picturenaut

The most commonly used HDR or HDRI software (Photoshop and Photomatix) is expensive and slow. Creating an HDR or HDRI image, followed by Tonemapping in Photoshop costs several minutes. Photomatix is a little bit faster. But now there's Picturenaut: HDR software as a free download, which is much faster and also very good!

Although the dynamic range and signal / noise ratio of digital cameras is growing, there are still situations where it is impossible for the highlights and shadow areas with good image to highlight 1. In these situations take HDR photographers (where HDR stands for High Dynamic Range) photos of several similar subject, that are exposed differently. Then such a multiple bracket (8 bits) or jpg (14 bit) RAW images combined into 1 (32 bit) HDR image, with its shadow without noise, bright highlights. If your photos do not stand size, the software knows the current HDR images still well over each other to submit. HDR images are now usually made with Photoshop or Photomatix, but Picturenaut constitutes a serious threat. Especially since this HDR software works well and fast, and easy to download and install another free. The makers of the software, Mehl and Mark Christian Bloch, you have to ask a small fee ($ 5 = 3 euro eighties) via Paypal at their own costs. You are not obligated, but it is so attentive to this request.

Tonemapping

In the second step, the 32-bit HDR image is transformed back into one (8 or 16 bits) LDR image with a special process called "Tonemapping". For this, there are two options in Picturenaut, again both easy to use:

  • Adaptive logaritmic saturated colors in the highlights (with photos of colored lights such as neon signs or sunsets)
  • Photo Receptor for all other situations

The uniqueness of the tone mapping Picturenaut is immediately visible on the screen (see the picture below, where both tone mapping to illustrate menus are shown simultaneously). Not in a small panel like PhotoMatix, but for the whole picture. Picturenaut is so fast that no act of the Tone Folder many minutes (Photoshop CS4) or minutes (PhotoMatix), but you have the immediate result. The quality of the final image is tone mapping with Picturenaut at least as good as Photoshop or Photomatix.

Picturenaut, free HDR software, HDRI

Now also with "anti-ghosting"

The main disadvantage of Picturenaut, where you find Picturenaut still in development, was the lack of "anti-ghosting" If you take 2 subsequent pictures, with someone passing by in one of the pictures, the software would create a "ghost": with the person being either half transparent or partially visible. Since version 3 is Picturenaut also features anti-ghosting.
